Glentoran Academy’s annual presentation day took place this past Sunday at La Mon Hotel and it turned out to be a great occasion with around 500 people in attendance to celebrate what has been yet another record breaking season for our Academy.
The event opened with a fantastic presentation by our club Chairman, Stephen Henderson who used his time in front of the Academy players and their parents to remind everyone of the great and illustrious history of our club and the exciting future that lies ahead of it with these young players at the forefront of that vision.
All the players in our Junior Academy then received a medal and certificate from first team squad player Adam Calvert and the legendary Roy Coyle before the awards got underway for the senior end players.
The senior end awards recognised the efforts of all the players within the Academy while also highlighting some outstanding individual achievements throughout the past season from U13 to U19 level.
The awards handed out on the day were for the Most Improved Player at each age, the Leading Goal Scorer and Leading Assist Maker at each age, the Player’s Player of the Year and the overall Player of the Year. For the first time the Academy recognised its fantastic goalkeepers by introducing a Golden Gloves award for the Goalkeeper with the most clean sheets.
In addition there were three Outstanding Achievement awards given for a player from our U15, U16 and U17 who made massive strides this season in playing at a higher age group.
Finally, the Royston Magee Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to The Academy was awarded to Nichola Kelly for her tireless and dedicated secretarial help over the years, the Academy would not be in the strong position it currently is if not for volunteers like Nichola and we were delighted to recognise her contribution in this way.
A full review of the Academy’s campaign for 2014/15 will be shared on Glentoran.com over the coming weeks when all seasons have been finished – there are still a few games left including a Plate Final and a league title challenge in the National League – in the meantime, see below a full list of yesterday’s prize winners.
Congratulations to all and to their team mates and coaches who provide the platform for success.
