Match Preview

Matchday 16 in the Danske Bank Premiership sees Glentoran face Coleraine at the Oval. The Glens lost 4-1 at the Showgrounds when the teams met earlier in the season and will be keen to gain some sort of revenge for that result. Manager, Gary Haveron will be looking to extend the 5 game unbeaten league run the team are currently enjoying.

There have been 7 league meetings at the Oval over the past 4 seasons. Glentoran have won 2 of those with the other 5 ending all square; 4 by a 1-1 scoreline.

The two sides met on five occasions last term with Glentoran winning twice, Coleraine winning once and two games being drawn. The Bannsiders won the opening encounter, played at the Showgrounds on 8th August, by a solitary goal. In late October a penalty from Curtis Allen cancelled out Brown’s early goal at the Oval. The teams then met twice in two weeks with a David Scullion strike settling the first of those on 29th March whilst two weeks later Jonathan Smith’s penalty at the Showgrounds gave Glentoran a share of the spoils with McLaughlin having put the home side in front. The final meeting, also played at the Showgrounds, was in the end of season Europa League play-offs. Calum Birney gave the Glens a halftime lead and Curtis Allen then extended the advantage with a close range header. Although McGonigle pulled a late goal back for the home side it was Glentoran who progressed to face Cliftonville in the final.
