Although six league places separate the two clubs, the previous three matches this season have been much closer than the league places would indicate. A late winner gave the Blues a 2-1 victory in Gary Haveron’s first game as manager in September. We drew 1-1 at Windsor Park on Boxing Day and in last month’s Irish Cup match we were defeated by an extra time winner after the 90 minutes again finished 1-1.
Both teams drew 1-1 in their last Danske Bank Premiership matches. Glentoran drew 1-1 at Solitude after Cliftonville cancelled out a Curtis Allen opener while Linfield drew with bottom team Portadown to effectively kill their title hopes for a fifth consecutive season.
The Glens have injury and sickness concerns for the match with Calum Birney (possible glandular fever), Marcus Kane (hamstring), and Ciaran Caldwell (thigh) all definitely out while Aaron Harmon, Stephen O’Flynn and Chris Lavery all missed training on Thursday with various illnesses and are doubts for the match.
Manager Gary Haveron said:” It’s been a tough week with injuries and illness but that will give other players a chance. Curtis Black and Salou Jallow will both come in to the first team squad for Saturday after doing well for the U20 team. Curtis scored four in his home debut for the U20s last week so he’s in good form and won’t fear promotion. We’re assessing all our options over the next 24 hours and some other young lads may also get their opportunity on Saturday.”
The Board of Directors at Glentoran Football Club would again request that all supporters travelling to the Oval by private car consider the local residents when deciding where and how to park.
