Tre Sterling rejoins Glentoran

Thu, 05/01/2017 - 22:00

The club is delighted to announce that Tre Sterling has rejoined the club after 2 years in full time football with Fleetwood Town.

Tre (17) joined the Glentoran Academy aged 11 and played his entire youth career at the club, winning numerous trophies and personal accolades. He captained Glentoran at all his age groups, represented Northern Ireland in the Victory Shield and at Under 17 and is a regular member of the current international Under 19 squad.

Tre joined Fleetwood Town FC in Football League One aged 16 on scholarship terms and had forced his way into the reserve team quicker than expected.  Earlier this season Fleetwood indicated that a professional deal was on the table for Tre, but he decided to return home as he missed Belfast. Tre was offered terms by a number of senior NIFL clubs on his return but he has always stated that Glentoran would get first refusal as his club of choice if he returned home. Tre has always believed that Glentoran made him the player he is and he is delighted to have returned to his football home.

Manager Gary Haveron stated tonight: “I’m delighted to bring Tre back to The Oval. As a club we need to be aware of any talented young player who returns to Northern Ireland and we need to make sure they know they’ll get their opportunity to be a success at Glentoran. Tre was doing well at Fleetwood so we know we’ve got a player whose confidence is high and who has a lot to give.

He trained with a couple of other senior clubs who were keen to sign him but he had 4 or 5 great sessions with us so we knew he was keen to join us.

This is win-win for us. Tre is fresh. He’s been in full time training and is very close to first team level in the Irish League.

Tre is tenacious and hard in the tackle but he’s also very composed and comfortable in possession and a real athlete with a great attitude. He’s a classy player who plays right back or centre back but can also play in centre midfield. He ticks a lot of boxes for us.”

Everyone at Glentoran welcomes Tre to the club. We’re sure he will be a great success and a valuable player for many years to come.
