SQUAD NEWS 2024 SEASON

International Update (4th March 2024)

6 current Glens players – Joely Andrews, Kerry Beattie, Nadene Caldwell, Chloe McCarron, Emily Wilson and Demi Vance were in the Northern Ireland senior squad  for its home and away  UEFA Nations League Play-Off games against Montenegro.

In the away leg Demi scored the second NI goal in a 2-0 win, the other goal coming from Glens Legend Lauren Wade, now with Reading FC from a Demi assist. Demi was voted Player of the Match.

The home leg was a 1-1 draw at the National Stadium which means Northern Ireland retain their place in League B for the European Qualifiers phase of the Women’s Nations League later this year.

6 more Glentoran players – Aimee Kerr, Kascie Weir, Megan Neill, Rachel McIntyre, Sarah Tweedie and Sofie Keenan were in the Under 19 squad for 2 friendlies v Greece in preparation for games against Estonia, Kazakhstan and Georgia in April in stage two of the qualifiers for Women’s U19 Euro 2024.

In the first game our first teamer Kascie Weir scored the only goal in a 1-0 win at the Blanchflower Stadium. In the second, 5 of our players had game time but a second half burst from the Greek team resulted in a 3-1 away win.

Laura Dowey, Clodagh Maguire and Rhianna Murphy were selected for the U17 squad to face Malta and Luxembourg, in stage two of the qualifiers for Women’s U17 Euro 2024. The girls had a 5-1 win over Malta and a 4-1 win over Luxembourg.

Finally, we’ve had 3 players selected for the 20-strong panel chosen to represent Northern Ireland at an upcoming UEFA development tournament. The four-team mini tournament featuring Spain, Belgium, Iceland and Northern Ireland is due to be staged in Belfast from 10 to 15 March. Congratulations and good luck to Lily Jeffrey, Caitie McGurnaghan and Anna Walsh.

Well done to all the Glens players for their contribution to the international sides this week. All bodes well for the new season and the future at Glentoran Women.

2024 Premiership Fixtures Announced (3rd March 2024)

Glentoran Women will start their defence of the Sports Direct Women’s Premiership with a home game v Crusaders Strikers on Sunday 5th May.

Home games this season have been moved to the Blanchflower Stadium, Holywood Road where the availability of stands and terraces will prove a much better facility for both home and away supporters.

The team is now fully back in pre-season training with twelve of our squad away on international duty last week with either the senior or under 19 Northern Ireland squads.

Full league fixtures are outlined below. All cup fixtures will be announced here once we know them.

All Island Cup Draw made (22 February 2024)

The draw has been made for the forthcoming season’s Women’s All Island Cup, run jointly by Northern Ireland Football League and the League of Ireland.

This season Glentoran Women have been drawn in a group with holders Galway United, Sligo Rovers and Athlone Town.

The dates for individual matches have yet to be agreed but this season the tournament is to be played over a longer period than last season’s inaugural cup.

The top two teams in each group will go forward to the quarter final and ties will be played on the following dates:

• Group game one: 23rd March.
• Group game two: 20th April.
• Group game three: 18th May.
• Quarter Final: 22nd June.
• Semi Final: 20th July.
• Final: 20th July.

Last season Galway United defeated Cliftonville Ladies 1-0 in the Final  at the Showgrounds in Sligo.

Once dates and venues for specific matches have been agreed they will be published here.

Super 6 for N. Ireland squad (12 February 2024)

Congratulations and good luck to the six Glentoran Women players selected by  manager Tanya Oxtoby for Northern Ireland's upcoming UEFA Nations League Play-Off games against Montenegro home and away. A totally deserved honour for all six with a couple of others very unlucky to miss out. We're all with you!

Welcome 3 new signings (8 January 2024)

Glentoran Women’s preparations for the 2024 season were ramped up this weekend with the signings of  Sofie Keenan and Aimee Neal. Both girls are currently regular members of the Northern Ireland U19 squad.

Sofie (17) is a left back who joins us from Linfield. She joined the Blues in 2021 and  where she was a regular first team starter last season. She is from Warrenpoint.

Aimee (20) is a centre back from Fivemiletown and joins from Sion Swifts. While at Swifts Aimee won the League Cup and was a member of the Swifts side that lost the Electric Ireland Cup Final to the Glens in 2022.

Head Coach Kim Turner said of the new signings: “I'm delighted that Sofie and Aimee have put pen to paper and signed for Glentoran. They have youth on their side but also bring experience from playing in the NIFL Premier League and at International Youth level. They will add depth to our squad defensively and I'm really excited to work with both players and develop them alongside our other new signing Aimee Kerr.  I welcome our new signings to Glentoran and look forward to them meeting the rest of the players in Pre-Season.”

Aimee Kerr was our first new signing of the close season, joining in November. Aimee (17) joins us after four seasons with Ballyclare Comrades. Se is a midfielder who is also a member of the Northern Ireland U19 squad.

SQUAD NEWS 2023 SEASON

Glentoran Women 3-0 Cliftonville Ladies

Electric Ireland Challenge Cup Final

This remarkable Glentoran Women squad completed a wonderful fortnight and season at the National Stadium last night as this ultimately convincing win over Cliftonville gave them their fifth consecutive Electric Ireland Women’s Challenge Cup and their third league and cup double in four seasons.

Kim Turner made just one  change to last week’s starting line up with Sarah Tweedie returning at right back so the Glens started out with the team that took them undefeated to the league title and to this final.

The Reds probably started the game better and has the ball in the Glens net after 30 minutes when striker Caitlin McGuinness tucked home a Marissa Callaghan pass from close range. However the goal was disallowed as the flag was already up for offside.

Another McGuinness sister, former Glens striker Kirsty, almost immediately afterwards beat the offside trap but was distracted by Glens keeper Ashleigh McKinnon and her effort went just wide of the target. This incident proved to be a major turning point in the game as the teams stayed even at half time.

 

The Glens started the second half much more positively and broke the deadlock on 55 minutes. The opener had a very familiar look about it. Nadene Caldwell sent Emily Wilson free on the right. Her cross was headed out by a Reds defender but only as far as the lethal Kerry Beattie who took a touch and made no mistake with an unstoppable drive home from 12 yards. This was Golden Boot winner Beattie’s 36th goal of the season, an outstanding return from a player who’s still just 21.

While the Glens’ lead didn’t look in danger the nerves of supporters weren’t eased for another 20 minutes when Demi Vance received a short corner from Joely Andrews. Vance’s cross deep into the box was met by Emma McMaster whose header somehow made it through a crowded box to deflect off a Reds defender into the net. Another good Cup Final for Emma who scored the only goal of the 2019 final.

Things got a bit spicy after this and former Glens winger Vicky Carleton was shown a straight red five minutes before the end for a high and two footed lunge on Demi Vance.

The game was completely put to bed in the final minute of normal time. Vance played a pinpoint pass across the field to 17-year-old sub Kascie Weir. Weir made a direct run into the Cliftonville box before slipping a lovely pass back to Rachel Rogan who made no mistake. Rogie then hit first time past Reds keeper Norney for her own tenth goal of the season.

If you’re going to end the season on a high, a 3-0 win over the league’s other top team is the way to do it. No squad could deserve it more than this one.

Champions! Glens Women triumph at Seaview

Glentoran Women put in a second half performance worthy of champions to see off strong resistance from Crusaders and clinch the Sports Direct Women's Premiership title, their third in four years and a record tenth overall.

The Glens started with the experienced Ashleigh McKinnon in goal following Ellie Scott’s injury in our last game on Monday night, and got off to a positive start in a frantic first half hour, with Emily Wilson and Joely Andrews in particular putting the resolute Crues defence under pressure. Wilson had the Glens best effort against her old team with a strong shot well saved by Maddy Harvey Clifford. For all the Glens good attacking work they found it difficult to get the ball to 35-goal top scorer Kerry Beattie.

Crusaders also worked well but the visiting defence dealt well with everything thrown at them with the back four of Tweedie, McMaster, Timoney and Foy all looking very comfortable. However the Crues came closest to opening the first half corner when Amy McGivern’s header hit the post.

Any nerves among the Glentoran players and supporters were eased somewhat four minutes after the break when Demi Vance broke through the Crues defence to pick her spot with a deft finish to give the visitors the lead. This came just after Nadene Caldwell had headed the ball into the back of the net but had her effort disallowed. 

The Glens continued to work hard to make the points safe and eventually did so on 68 minutes when Emily Wilson’s shot hit the crossbar and bounced behind the goal line before being scrambled away. The Crues defence protested strongly but the referee remained resolute and the goal stood.

Demi Vance then completed the scoring and doubled her own tally just inside injury time with a long range shot into the corner of the net to secure the points and the title.

Its been a remarkable campaign from the new Champions.  With one game still to play, they still remain on track for an undefeated campaign having not lost any of their 17 league matches to date with just two draws with former champs Cliftonville blotting their record of fifteen winds from seventeen.

Good Luck Caragh

Glentoran Women FC is both sad and proud to announce that our forward Caragh Hamilton has joined Lewes FC, who play in the full time English Women’s Championship.

Caragh is synonymous with Glentoran. She came through the ranks at the club, made her first team debut at a young age and has won countless with us. She also established herself in the Northern Ireland senior squad and was very unlucky to miss last season’s Euros through injury. She was one of the seven Glentoran players to be named yesterday in the squad to face Scotland and Czechia next month.

Characteristically Caragh went out on a high with a match winning hat trick in her last game, last weekend’s 5-0 win in Dublin over League of Ireland leaders Peamount United in the Avenir Sports All Ireland Cup.

Kim Turner, First Team Coach at Glentoran Women, said this morning of Caragh: “Caragh is a great player and an even better person . This is an opportunity she deserves and I believe it’s come at a really good time for her. Her commitment and dedication at every training session and how she looks after herself and prepares herself for games, has put her in a position to make this move and I feel this will make the transition for her a lot easier.

We are sorry to see Caragh go - we will miss her on and off the pitch, but as a club this is a move we fully support. We want the best for our players and hopefully the day will come where we can offer them full time football at home.

Caragh is a role model for any young girl aspiring to be footballer. We wish Caragh all the best on her new opportunity and like any Glentoran player who has gone across the water,  she will always be welcome to pull on the Glentoran shirt again.”

Glens thank Makyla

Before kick off on Friday evening, Glentoran Women legend Makyla Mulholland was presented with a gift from the club and her teammates to recognise her retirement after an outstanding career as a Glentoran player.

Makyla first  joined Glentoran as a 16-year-old in 2007. In her years she was won each of the senior trophies in Northern Ireland on numerous occasions and has played frequently in Europe for the club. Probably her most memorable game was the remarkable Electric Ireland Women's Challenge Cup Final in 2018 when two fantastic late late headed goals from Makyla overturned a Linfield lead to clinch the cup for the Glens.

Glentoran Vice Chairman Colin Jess presented the gift to Makyla and said of her contribution to the club: “On behalf of myself and Glentoran Football Club I would like to wish Makyla every success for the future.  As a supporter of our club I have had many memories but none more so than the Women's Irish Cup final in 2018. One nil down to our arch rivals Linfield with five minutes to go and up steps Makyla to grab two goals to clinch the trophy.  Makyla has been a role model for everyone attached to the Women’s game and her loyalty and commitment is to be commended.  Makyla, all at Glentoran wish you the very best for your future career. “

Congratulations Joely

Joely at last night's dinner with Kim Turner (First Team Coach GWFC) and Emma Donaghey (Physio GWFC)

Congratulations to Joely Andrews on winning the 2022 Women’s Premiership Player of the Year Award at last night's NIFL Northern Ireland Football Awards on Saturday evening.

This highly deserved award is Northern Ireland regular Joely's second individual award of this stature as last year she won the Ulster Footballer of the Year Award. Joely , who turns 21 next week has been at Glentoran since she was 8 years old.

Congratulations to Emily Wilson who was also in the three player shortlist and to Terry Devlin who was shortlisted for the men's Young Player of the Year award.

A proud night for Glentoran.

 

Glentoran Women: New Signing Ellie Scott

Glentoran Women are delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Ellie Scott  

Ellie Scott has signed from Lisburn Rangers. The Northern Ireland U17 international is the latest signing for Glentoran Women ahead of the 2023 season which begins on Sunday against Derry City. 

General Manager Billy Clarke: "Ellie is someone we’ve been watching for a while. She has huge ability and we’re delighted to add her to our squad."

Glentoran Women: Two major signings announced

Glentoran Women are delighted to announce that current Northern Ireland internationals Demi Vance and Emily Wilson have rejoined the club on professional contracts ahead of the 2023 season.

With over 85 international appearances, Demi Vance is one of East Belfast’s greatest sporting daughters. Having played in America, Australia, Scotland and England, she returns to Glentoran aiming to add to the 19 trophies already attained at the club. The 2019 NIFL Women’s Premiership Player of the Year has also won major honours during her time with Northern Redbacks in Australia and Rangers in Scotland.

Emily has impressed for both club and country, scoring her first senior Northern Ireland goal against Luxembourg in 2021 before being included in last summer’s European Championship finals squad. She was the second highest goalscorer in last season’s Women’s Premiership and has netted over 30 times in the league throughout the last three seasons. Emily started her career at Glentoran and she to the Bet McLean Oval after 10 years with Crusaders Strikers.

We welcome both players back to Glentoran and look forward to another successful season together.

In other players news, two members of the 2022 squad have left the club. Casey Howe has joined Sligo Rovers in the League of Ireland after two seasons at Glentoran. Shannon Dunne has rejoined her hometown club Derry City where she was previously captain. Shannon had three years at Glentoran. We would like to thank both players for their contribution to a very successful period for Glentoran, and to wish them all the best for the future.

Glentoran Women 2023 Season Preparations

Preparation has started for the Glentoran Women’s’ 2023 Season.

The team met in late January ahead of a season that will see them compete in the Northern Ireland Women’s Premiership, the County Antrim Challenge Cup, the Irish Cup, and a new Island of Ireland competition. This new competition will see select teams from NIFL and LOI go head-to-head over the summer months.

Players completed pre-season initial testing using equipment from Altima Clinics in Magherafelt before embarking on a 10-week strength and conditioning programme. The squad will be tested again before the season starts to determine progress.

Several additions have been made to the backroom team with a clear focus on player welfare and ensuring that players are prepared to succeed both on and off the pitch.

Sandy McDermott (Glentoran Strength and Conditioning) has joined the team and will work with Team Physiotherapist Emma Donaghey to ensure players have a tailored fitness programme, helping to reduce injuries and to effectively rehabilitate players recovering from injury.

Stephen Floyd (SF Performance Nutrition) will support players in optimizing their performance through workshops and nutrition advice throughout the season.

Following successful spells with St James Swifts FC and Hope United, Gemma Quigley joins Kim Turner, Russell Bowers and Andy Smith as 1st Team Coaches.

SQUAD NEWS 2022 SEASON

Royal honour for Glens' Gail

We are delighted that Gail Redmond, current Glentoran Volunteer Coach, former captain and all-round legend of the Women’s game in Northern Ireland has been honoured by His Majesty the King with an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List. Gail has received her honour in recognition of her services to women's football.

Gail, whose full-time role is Women's Development Manager at the IFA, has been involved with Glentoran since 2008. After a highly successful career in the USA as player then Head Couch at the  University of Southern Mississippi, she returned to Northern Ireland and joined Glentoran, swayed by Cheryl Lamont and the late Maura Muldoon, In her time as a player with us, Gail won an incredible sixteen winners’ medals – including two trebles and two doubles. She also played three times in the Champions League. She also played 25 times for Northern Ireland, captained her country and scored twice in an era when Women’s international football was in its infancy. Since her retirement as a player, Gail has played a massive part in Glentoran’s outstanding trophy win in recent years as Volunteer Coach.

Congratulations Gail. A true credit to Glentoran!

Glentoran Women 2-1 Sion Swifts Ladies

Electric Ireland Challenge Cup Final

Glentoran Women emulated the great Glentoran men's team of the 1980s to made it four Electric Ireland Women's Challenge Cup triumphs in a row with victory over Sion Swifts Ladies at the National Football Stadium this evening

A somewhat tentative opening to proceedings saw both sides sound each other out.

As play progressed Glentoran began to assert themselves more and fired a warning shot on 23 minutes when Kerry Beattie volleyed just wide of the target from a Jessica Foy set piece.

That proved to be a sign of things to come when, five minutes later, Foy opened the scoring with a superbly executed free-kick into the top left corner from just outside the right side of the area.

Then, barely five minutes after that, Sarah Tweedie showed great vision to spot a Joely Andrews run and delivered the perfect ball for the Northern Ireland international to unleash a right-foot shot beyond Jennifer Currie from around 12 yards out.

However Sion didn't let their heads drop, and might have pulled one back on 40 minutes when Aimee Neal flicked a backwards header just over the top from Kerry Brown's left-sided corner.

And they came even closer in first half stoppage time when Cora Chambers and Caoirse Doherty combined for the latter to send her effort just the wrong side of the upright after keeper Ashleigh McKinnon had committed herself.

Glentoran looked to add to their tally after the break, coming close on the hour after Foy threaded Caragh Hamilton through but Currie did well to close down the danger.

Hamilton came even closer a short time after that only to send a rasping effort from outside the area against the crossbar.

Further efforts followed with Andrews spotting an opening but could only lift the ball over from 20 yards while, on 69 minutes, Currie got a vital touch to direct a Beattie shot just wide.

Needing a couple of goals to force extra-time Sion upped the ante in the closing stage and were unlucky on 84 minutes when Naomi McLaughlin's left-foot drive from the edge of the area was tipped onto the bar.

Then, with two minutes remaining, the Co. Tyrone side set up a grandstand finish after Naomi McLaughlin clipped the ball forward for substitute Tara O'Connor-Farren to control and send a brilliant finish past the Glentoran keeper.

However, it wasn't enough to spark a late leveller as Glentoran held on to claim yet another piece of silverware.

Glentoran Women 3-1 Crusaders Strikers

Toals' County Antrim Cup Final

oals from Northern Ireland Euros stars Joely Andrews and Nadene Caldwell gave holders Glentoran a third successive County Antrim Cup in this Final clash with Crusaders at the Blanchflower Stadium tonight – a repeat of last year’s outcome between the same two sides.

Andrews’ opener on 40 minutes gave the Glens a half time lead, before her midfield partner Dino extended the lead shortly after the break. Joely made the game safe with a few minutes to go before Caitlyn Hamilton scored a late consolation for the Crues.

Wonderful legacy from Maura

We are delighted to announce that the late Maura Muldoon MBE, former Glentoran FC Director and along with Cheryl Lamont CBE one of the founders of Glentoran Women’s Football Club, has bequeathed a very generous annual donation to the Glentoran Girls’ Academy.

Cheryl Lamont CBE said of Maura’s legacy with GWFC: “Maura had a long-standing regard for Glentoran FC. She and I merged Belfast United WFC with Glentoran FC. She served as a Board member for a period on Glentoran FC. She believed that in regard to the development of the women’s game there needed to be greater structured investment in girls’ football. Before Maura died last year she wanted to ensure she did something supportive and practical for Glens girls academy and thereby in her memory and at her behest I am very happy to ensure the sponsorship of the girls’ academy over this next immediate period.”

Maura’s legacy has enabled the club to proceed with the appointment of Kim Turner as Head of Glentoran Girls and Women's Academy. This is the first appointment of its kind in Northern Ireland and Kim recently told BBC Sport: "We need to keep building on our recent success, and this is the perfect time. With the Euros still fresh in everyone's minds the time is now. Club football here has to take that step. It’s important to have that one club feel and until you've got a full-time female running the female department you'll never get it. We're just that step behind and it has to be the clubs coming together for the future of women's football in Northern Ireland. Potentially women in other clubs could occupy a similar role to mine." East Belfast woman and Northern Ireland international Kim is a lifelong Glens fan who began her playing career at Glentoran, before spending time in America and with Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City Ladies. She possesses her 'A' coaching licence.

Glentoran Director Colin Jess: “The Glentoran family has been indebted for many years to Maura for the work she carried out not only within the women and girls section but also as a Board member of the main club. This act of generosity is a real legacy for us to remember her by and will help grow and develop the young girls currently within the Academy and those yet to join. This will ensure Maura’s legacy lives long in the memory of us all and all at Glentoran give their thanks.”

Glentoran's Euro 2022 star Joely Andrews is the Danske Bank Women’s Player of the Month for August.

The midfielder - last season's Ulster Player of the Year -  followed her success at international level with a string of fine performances for club Glentoran in August.

Joely played for the Glens in the Women’s Champions League and scored an impressive brace in a 4-0 derby victory over Linfield Ladies in the Danske Bank Premiership.

Reflecting on the summer, Joely said: “The Euros will stay with me for the rest of my life. To play at that level in front of huge crowds was incredible. I just did my best to enjoy every moment and take it all in.

“Now I’ve switched my focus to Glentoran. Although we didn’t progress in the Champions League, we learned a lot from the experience. We want to chase down Cliftonville and retain the Premiership title, so we can have another crack at Europe again next year.”

Glens Girls are just champion

Congratulations to Glentoran Women Reserves who beat Linfield Ladies Swifts to the Electric Ireland Women’s Academy League title with an emphatic 6-1 victory in South Belfast.

Our U19s went to Midgley needing a win to win the league as they entered the game three points behind league leaders Linfield U19s. who needed only a draw at home to secure the title.

Rachel McIntyre scored after two minutes to put the Glens in front. Rachel went on to add two more for her hat trick. Maeve McConaghie with two and Natalia Orlowska completed the six-goal tally with Anna Walsh scoring a consolation for the hosts.

Both sides finished the campaign on 25 points from 10 games, but the free scoring Glens had a goal difference of 36 compared to just 13 for Linfield.

Well done girls. A fantastic achievement.

Glens Women off to Romania

Glentoran Women set off for Romania this morning to play their opening tie in the UEFA Champions League.

The match is against Romanian Champions Olimpia Cluj in the Cluj Arena. Kick-off is at 4pm UK time on Thursday 18th August. We defeated these opponents 2-0 in the tournament last season with goal from two of our international stars, Chloe McCarron and Joely Andrews, both of whom travelled with their teammates this morning.

As with last season, we are competing in a tournament format with two semi-final games. If we are victorious on Thursday afternoon, the team will meet the winners of the clash between Maltese champions Birkirkara FC and Bosnian league winners SFK Sarajevo on 21 August, with a third-placed playoff on the same date for the other two sides in the group.

The only player missing from last year’s victorious starting line up is Lauren Wade, following her post Euros move to Reading, but the club was quick to resign Annie Timoney from Celtic and Glasgow City respectively in time for the tournament. Sam Kelly misses out to the same long-term injury that kept here out of the Euros, but better news is that Caragh Hamilton – who also missed the Euros through injury – is fit to travel after a very successful return to action in last week’s 4-0 away win over Linfield.

Best Wishes to Lauren

We are pleased to announce that Lauren Wade will be joining WSL Super League club Reading FC Women. Her transfer will be completed when she signs for Reading today.

Her performances for Northern Ireland in the recent European Championships were eye catching to any club looking to add a player with pace and goal scoring ability to their squad. Having played at the top level in Scotland and Iceland and with 41 full International appearances to her credit, Lauren comes with an abundance of experience which also adds to her playing experience.”

Lauren spoke to www.glentoran.com about her move: “I’m absolutely delighted to have signed for Reading FC. The last year has been very positive for me at club and international and off the back of the Euros I felt that this was too good of an opportunity to turn down.

We are delighted to announce the signings of Kerry Beattie and Annie Timoney from Glasgow City FC and Celtic FC Women, respectively. Both players have returned to the club following a spell in the Scottish Women’s Premier League.

 

Billy said of the returning players: “Having been last season’s leading goal scorer Kerry will add more goals to our attack. The experience of playing at the top level in Scotland will have been a valuable football learning experience for her. She was amongst the goals during her time at Glasgow City and we look forward to seeing her playing with us again and adding to our exciting forward options.

Annie has been one of the most consistent defenders in our league since she signed from Lewes in England 3 years ago. Her period at Celtic will have added to the valuable football experience gained playing in England. Annie’s defensive qualities and experience will be an asset to us in our attempt to retain the league title and remaining Cups.

Both players are quality additions to a talented squad of players.

Our injured players, Caragh Hamilton and Casey Howe have returned to training. Both will be available for selection this week. They are also two quality players who we will be delighted to see back playing again.

August will be a busy month for us with league and cup matches and the Women’s Champions League to play in Romania from the 16th to 22nd. “

Ulster Award for Glens' Joely

The club is delighted to announce that midfielder Joely Andrews has been voted Ulster Women’s Footballer of the Year for the 2021 season. The award was organised by the Castlereagh Glentoran Supporters Club alongside the long-standing men’s award.

Joely had a wonderful season and it’s a testament to ger that she was selected for the award from the high competition in a squad that won its second consecutive clean sweep and competed well in Europe, scoring the opening goal in our 2-0 win over Olimpia Cluj.

As well as winning Player of the Match in the Electric Ireland Irish Cup Final, Joely we stablished herself in the full Northern Ireland squad, scoring her first senior international goal away to Austria last month.

Although just turned 20, Joely has been with the club since she was just 8 years old and is one of the many high-profile graduates of Glentoran Academy in the current squad. Her award keeps the Castlereagh GSC trophy at the Bet McLean Oval for a second consecutive season, following Caragh Hamilton’s win in 2020. It also represents a double 2021 win for the Glens, with Kerry Beattie taking the NIFWA award.

Kerry is Northern Ireland's Top Player

Kerry Beattie has been named the Women’s Premiership Player of the Year.

Kerry was part of the Glentoran side that won last season’s Women’s Danske Bank Premiership. She scored an incredible 30 goals in 23 domestic games and her performances earned her a move to Scottish side Glasgow City.

On receiving her award Kerry  said: “I would like to say a huge thank to everyone who voted for me to win this award. It means the world to me to be recognised by the Football Writers’ and NIFL.

“I had a fantastic 2021 with both Glentoran and Northern Ireland. I’m really looking forward to the European Championships this summer. It will be a massive moment for women’s football in Northern Ireland.”

A proud Billy Clarke, Manager of Glentoran Women, said of Kerry: “Kerry had a magnificent 2021 season and finished as the Women’s Premier League’s Leading Goalscorer. Winning her second Premier League medal along with the Toal’s Co Antrim and the Electric Ireland Irish Cups added to her collection from previous years 2020 and 2019.

In addition, Kerry was a member of the N.I. Senior Women’s International Squad that qualified for the final stages of the European Championships to be held in England in July this year.To cap off 2021 in November that year she made her International debut against Macedonia and scored her first goal in that match.

To be named the Premiership Women’s Player of the Year for 2021 is an endorsement of Kerry’s   performances last season. All of the players and coaching staff at Glentoran Women are very proud of her achievements.”

Six Glens in Northern Ireland World Cup Squad

No fewer than six members of the all conquering Glentoran Women squad have been picked by Kenny Shiels for his squad for next month’s crunch FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 qualifiers against Austria and England.

Congratulations to Nadene Caldwell, Sam Kelly, Caragh Hamilton, Lauren Wade, Chloe McCarron and Lauren Wade on their selection. Sam and Caragh both return after recovering from serious injuries in the 2021 season.

Also included are our former players Demi Vance (Rangers) and Jackie Burns (BK Hacken, Sweden)

A win against the Austrians would put Northern Ireland on course to finish second in the group and potentially reach a play-off for a place at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next year.

Northern Ireland currently lie third behind England and Austria in Group D. They have 13 points from six qualifiers to date, having won four, drawn one and lost one. England have won six from six, scoring 53 times without reply, while Austria are second in the table and narrowly ahead of Northern Ireland on goal difference. The Austrians also have 13 points but have scored 29 and conceded four compared to Northern Ireland’s 30 for and six against.

Everyone at Glentoran Women wishes goalkeeper Jackie Burns all the very best as she leaves the club to start a two year full time professional career with BF Häcken in Gothenburg, Sweden. Jackie - Northern Ireland's first choice keeper and likely to remain so for the forthcoming Euros in England - was a star of the Glens' 2020 League and Cup winning squad and started the 2021 season as first choice keeper before returning to university in the USA. She will be missed by everyone at the club.

Jackie will become the fourth recent former Glens player to operate full time in the forthcoming season. She joins Demi Vance (Rangers), Annie Timoney (Celtic) and Kerry Beattie (Glasgow City). All three are starring with their new clubs and will be pushing hard to join Kenny Shiels' Northern Ireland Euros squad, along with many of our current players.

Glentoran Women overcame a second half challenge at the Bet McLean Oval this evening to retain their Danske Bank Women's Premiership crown with this 3-2 home win over runners up Cliftonville.

Glens were outstanding in the first half and led 2-0 at half time through goals from last season’s NIFL Player of the Year Caragh Hamilton and the legendary Kelly Bailie. The Reds shocked their hosts with two second half goals, but the winner and league clincher came appropriately from this season’s leading scorer Kerry Beattie.

Glentoran strengthened their position as Northern Ireland's most successful club in Women's football as this was the Glens' record ninth championship win since the inception of the league.

Glens' Women's Euro Squad Announced

Glentoran Women set off next week to play their opening tie in the UEFA Champions League.

The match is against Swiss champions Servette FCCF in the Wikliof Holding Arena in Mariehamn, Finland. Kick off is at noon on Wednesday 18th August.

Announcing the travelling squad, General Manager Billy Clarke told www.glentoran.com : " It's been 5 years since we last competed in the Women's Champions League when we finished 3rd. As a club and squad we are so looking forward to playing in this competition again. We are now competing in a new tournament format with 2 semi-final games on Wednesday 18th August when we play Servette the Swiss Champions and Cluj from Romania play Aland United, the Host Club from Finland. The 2 winners play on Saturday 21st night with the 2 losers involved in a 3rd place playoff on Saturday afternoon. 

Having finished 3rd in both 2015 and 2016 competitions we know how difficult the task is to get to the final when we face Servette ranked 17th against our 42nd ranking. Our preparations have gone well, and we are playing well in our league and cup games. I know our players and coaches are looking forward to the tournament and we will do our best and enjoy the experience”.

The club’s most experienced player Kelly Bailie, who has played for the club in Europe on seven previous seasons and who this season is operating very successfully as a centre back, shared some of her thoughts on this European adventure: “For any of the players that haven't been to Europe I'd say: Enjoy the experience and believe in yourselves. Work hard and continue to all the good things that we have been doing over the past number of months. Everyone deserves to be there and has the talent to produce a top-class performance and hopefully get a result.

As a club we always want to improve on our previous European experiences. I think over the years we have done that and got stronger along the way. Although it's going to a couple of tough games there is no doubt about the quality of the squad, and I believe we will all leave the pitch knowing we gave our all. Even though we haven't been in Europe since 2015 we will go into next week determined to do well and wanting to get a result. Our squad is full of extremely talented players that are also willing to work hard for one another. Kerry Beattie named Player of the Month

Free scoring Glentoran striker Kerry Beattie has been selected as the Danske Bank Northern Ireland Football Writers’ Association Women’s Player of the Month for June.

The in-form Kerry shot her way to the award with a stunning tally of eight goals in just four Danske Bank Women’s Premiership games during the month.

Kerry scored in all of Glentoran’s games during June, when we went through the month with a 100 per cent record.

That included an impressive four-goal haul in the Glens’ 4-1 win over Sion Swifts Ladies and the 18-year-old was the stand-out choice of the Northern Ireland Football Writers.

"It’s the first award I’ve received so it’s a big deal to me,” said Kerry.

“I’ve been playing for the senior team for the last couple of seasons, but this is the first season that I have been starting regularly and I have been getting lots of minutes.

“Scoring goals is helping and I am just really enjoying my football at the minute, which is the most important thing and I think that is why I am playing so well.”

June was also a special month personally for Kerry as she made her senior international debut for Northern Ireland in the 1-0 friendly defeat to Scotland as Kenny Shiels prepares his team for the start of the World Cup qualifiers in September and the Women’s Euro 2022 finals next summer.

Earning a place in the squad for those finals is a major carrot for the Lisburn girl and her goal-scoring displays are putting her at the forefront for selection.

Also on her mind is helping the Glens retain the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership title, as well as the Irish Cup and County Antrim Cup, which the club still hold from 2019.

“It’s great to be scoring goals,” she said.

“I am trying to push on and I am constantly thinking about the future and with the Women’s Euro 2022 finals next summer I want to be competing for a place in the squad.

“There is a lot of competition and it is important that I am scoring goals, most importantly for the club really because we need to be scoring goals to win games and keep all the trophies that we have.”

Glentoran announce signing of Northern Ireland international Chloe McCarron

Glentoran have announced the signing of Northern Ireland midfielder Chloe McCarron.

The 23-year-old joins the Women's Irish Premiership Champions after leaving Birmingham City, where she made 12 appearances since her arrival at the club in August 2020.

The midfielder first played for Northern Ireland’s Under-15 girls’ team as a 13-year-old.

She subsequently played several times at both U17 and U19 level before making her senior bow as a teenager in 2015, playing in three friendly internationals.Chloe played in both legs of Northern Ireland's historic win against Ukraine in April to reach the 2022 Euro finals.

Chloe believes her familiarity with multiple international stars at The Oval throughout her career to date has allowed her to settle into the club instantly in mid-season.

She explained to the NIFL web team: “I was familiar with almost all the players at the club already, not only having played against them in the league but also through the international setup and the junior teams.

“I knew I would settle in quickly because of this and the staff around the club have helped in that regard too.

“I had great years at Linfield but I wanted to be in an environment where everyone has that drive to win - at Glentoran they hate losing and it is more about the team than individuals.

“Everyone had raved about how good the setup at the club is and the facilities are really professional - everyone is here to win and nobody is there just to take part.”

Not only are the Glens battling for domestic glory, but they will play Swiss champions Servette FC Chênois Féminin in the Champions League next month.

“The opportunity to play in the Champions League is a huge incentive,” McCarron continued.

“Playing in the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership is a big challenge but when you’re playing against league winners from elsewhere in Europe it that next step up.

“You have to prepare that little bit more and you know the quality that you are facing - you need to be on top of your game or you will be punished.

“I wanted to challenge myself and push myself out of my comfort zone.”

McCarron’s stint in English football gave her a glimpse at life in the full-time game.

“What people don’t realise is how the step up to full-time football is much more than just the game itself,” she explained.

“It is not just the matches themselves but throughout the week there is so much going on behind the scenes that nobody sees that has an impact on matchday.

“You learn so much more off the pitch than you do on it, about how to prepare fully for games and training sessions, how best to recover and recuperate - you are constantly learning.

“England was a great experience for me in that sense and when I had to come back home, Glentoran was the next best thing in that sense.”

The move to the Glens also ensures she will be getting regular game-time ahead of the upcoming set of Northern Ireland fixtures.

“Everyone is talking about the finals next summer but a lot of people are forgetting we actually have games coming up in September, which is right around the corner,” said McCarron.

“My priority this month was to ensure I got minutes before then - firstly to be selected for the squad and the team, then to be able to push on from that.

“My aim is to be in the mix for next summer - there is so much competition for places and I know I’ll have to work hard to be involved.”

Champions Glentoran currently lead the way at the top of the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership but Cliftonville trail them by just one point while they have two games in hand.

McCarron believes this title race looks set to go to the wire: “The last time I played in this league was with Linfield and the title race went down to the final game and goal difference against Sion Swifts.

“There is the sense that this season could be similar because of the form of both teams - Cliftonville and ourselves.

“The key thing is to stay focused and take it one game at a time, to allow us to keep winning.”

Major new signings for the Champions

League Champions and current holder of all four of Northern Ireland’s senior trophies, Glentoran Women FC is delighted to announce a number of significant new signings in advance of the new season, and also two important additions to the first team coaching staff.

Lauren Wade has rejoined Glentoran after a highly successful spell with Glasgow City. Lauren told www.glentoran.com  : “I started playing football for Coleraine Ladies and played there until I signed for Glentoran in 2012. I spent 3 years with the Glens and in 2015 I was offered and accepted a 2-year scholarship at Carson Newman University in Tennessee USA. This was a fantastic experience. I gained many awards during my time at Cason Newman including –

2 Time all American, 2 Time SAC Player of the Year and 2 Time Carson Newman Female Athlete of the Year.

In 2019 I signed a professional contract with Icelandic team Throttur Reykjavik and this lead on to signing for Glasgow City, Scotland’s record 12 times National League Winners.

I have represented my country from age 16 and currently have 31 senior caps and 3 goals. I hope to add to both totals before I retire.

I have resigned for Glentoran Women as I enjoyed playing there before moving away from home and always said I’d return to play them. I’m looking forward to the season starting and getting back to playing in the Premier League.

Casey Howe has left Linfield to join the Glens for the new season. Casey told the club media team: “I started my footballing career at Ballinamallard FC at the age of 8 playing with boys in their national league up until I reached age 15. During my time at Ballinamallard, I played summer football with Mid Ulster Ladies, and then Linfield Ladies u17 and u19s.

 In my first two u19 seasons with Linfield, I was NIWFA League Player of the Year, and I was also league leading goalscorer in my 2nd season. I then entered senior football with Linfield where I played for 2 seasons and in this time I competed in the qualify rounds of the champions league. Alongside my club career I have worked my way up through the ranks on the international scene playing in all underage categories to then making my senior debut at the age of 17.

I’ve signed for Glentoran Women this season to further my football career. I’ve enjoyed pre-season training and I’m looking forward to our season starting”.

Jennifer McDade has joined from Shelbourne in Dublin and the defender also spoke to the media team: “I Started playing football with Crusaders from youth level until age 18 where, I won 2 League Titles and 2 Cups and got to play in a Champions League Qualifying Tournament. At age 18 went to America for a year on a scholarship with Southern Mississippi University.

I decided to return home after my year in America and signed for Linfield. During my time there we won 3 Premier League titles, the NIFL League cup and Toals County Antrim Cup. I also played in Champions League Qualifying Tournaments with Linfield.

In 2019 I left Linfield for a new challenge and signed for Shelbourne Ladies based in Dublin who play in the FAI Women’s National Premier League. I spent 18 months with them before returning home to sign for Glentoran Women. I’m looking forward to this new challenge with the Glens and hopefully help them to winning more trophies.

During my football career I have played at Northern Ireland at youth levels u15/u17/u19 and got a senior cap from a friendly game”. 

Stephen Murray and Lesley Winder have joined the coaching team at GWFC:

Stephen: “I grew up in Kilkenny and played football at school and locally until I went to USA on a 4-year scholarship to University of Memphis Lambuth in Tennessee. During that time, I played Semi Pro with Memphis Express and Nashville Metros.

After Graduating University, I Played Professionally with Wilmington Hammerheads in the USL League and played in the 1st Division in Croatia with NK Junak Sinj.

I coached at Triton College in Chicago and have also being involved with the County Tyrone Super Cup NI Team as a Lead Coach. I have Worked as a Soccer Scholarship Consultant for the past 8 Years with P4S Scholarships where I took teams over to America to compete against American Universities. Have now become owner/Director of my own Company called SMUSA Scholarships which sends Male and Female Students from Ireland earn sports scholarships in America and run annual tours to America.

Lesley: “I played every sport I could at a young age, but football was my passion. I represented my country from ages 11-17 in football. But just before starting university I tore my ACL and I struggled with direction and knowledge on how to return to play and decided that training and coaching would be my focus.

In terms of Strength and Conditioning I have worked with clubs such as Instonians Rugby, Grosvenor School, RBAI School, NI Civil Service Hockey, NI Women’s Volleyball, Belfast Harlequins Rugby, Mayobridge GAA and individual athletes from Ireland Cycling and Ulster Rugby. My aim is always to educate players and develop them to reach their true potential, to understand the work needed on and off the pitch.

I am impressed with the level of professionalism displayed by players, coaches and all staff at Glentoran Women and look forward to the start of the season”.

Top Award for Caragh

We are delighted to congratulate our attacking midfielder Caragh Hamilton on winning the first Player of the Month Award under a new partnership agreement between the Northern Ireland Football Writers Association and Danske Bank.

Caragh’s award is a reflection of outstanding early-season form for Glentoran Woman, which saw her score three times in five games during August and September to put the team at the top of the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership. That form also won her a recall to the Northern Ireland international team.

What made the 24-year-old’s performances even more impressive was that she had only just returned after taking some time out of the game. Her season, however, has now been ended by a serious knee ligament injury, sustained in our recent win over Cliftonville.

"I'm delighted to win this award as I was away from the game for a while,” said Caragh.

"I surprised myself, as I thought I would be a bit ‘rusty’. I got a few pre-season games under my belt to blow the cobwebs away, the team played well and gelled well, and I scored a few goals, which was a great boost.

"Obviously, I've picked up an injury, which is hard to take but, I'm pleased I was able to make an impact this season.”

Glentoran Women Manager Billy Clarke said of Caragh: “Caragh’s return to playing football for Glentoran Women after almost two years away has been a revelation. In our pre-season games, she soon got rid of any cobwebs that were hanging around as her fitness and touch began to come back.

Her early-season form has been outstanding, add scoring three goals in our first five games she has made a big contribution to us being at the top of the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership. Caragh’s form also came to the attention of Kenny Shields. The NI Senior Women’s Manager has recalled her to the Northern Ireland international squad.

It’s unfortunate that her season was ended prematurely by a serious knee injury in our last game against Cliftonville.

As a club we are delighted that Caragh has been chosen as the first monthly winner of NIFWA Danske Bank Premiership Player of the Month Award. It is further recognition of her contribution to the start of our season. Her impact will be missed.

Although Caragh’s contribution will be missed we have a big squad full of quality players who all want to play. I’ve no doubt they will be looking forward to making their mark when the opportunity arises between now and the end of the season.

Finally, a word of thanks to the NIFWA and Danske Bank for their partnership in bringing forward this award for the Women’s Premiership Player of the Month for seasons 2020 and 2021”.

Step up Glens Under 14s

Last year’s Under 13 squad has made the transition from 9 a side to 11 a side this year with seamless effort. With only 2 girls added to an already exciting squad and only being together in their second year as a team the girls have excelled. Goalkeeper Jasmine Graham, signed from Linfield, has added a stability to the team and 2009 player Cassie Henderson (daughter of former Irish league player Ryan), signed from Lurgan Celtic has added goals to defy her age.

In their first 11 a side game Cassie scored 2 goals to defeat Crusaders Strikers, a well-established team in girls’ football. The girls have had other highlights including some notable victories against Portavogie, Bloomfield, St Pats, and other performances against both 2007 and 2008 boys’ teams and in-house friendlies. They’ve faced national league boys’ teams, narrowly losing out 2-1 against Cliftonville and another narrow defeat against a SBYL top tier team in the form of Killyleagh, 4-3. The progress of the squad has been exceptional and the bond the girls have is second to none! The squad will be testing themselves this season again in the boys’ league.

Glens Women star in Northern Ireland away win

Congratulations to the SIX Glentoran players who were invoved in Friday evening's 0-6 away win by the Northern Ireland senior team the Faroe Islands in Torshavn.

Nadene Caldwell and Jackie Burns were in the starting lineup while Sam Kelly, Caragh Hamilton and Joely Andrews were second half substitutes during the win. Kerry Beattie was an unused sub. Our former star players Demi Vance (Rangers) and Lauren Wade also played a big part in the win.

Back in 2011 Glentoran officially launched its first ever Junior Academy for Girls.

Who would have thought, back then, a young 8 year old Joely Andrews (far right) pictured here with first team player Kelly Bailie would then go on to play alongside Kelly in the Glentoran Womens senior team.

A true example of how the player pathway works here at Glentoran Women as we provide an environment that helps all junior players realise their potential, whether that means they are the best club player they can be, seek a lifelong commitment to the game through coaching or volunteering or perhaps go on to represent their country.

Congratulations to Joely who has also recently started her coaching badges here at the club having already completed her level 1 and is currently coaching within our under 9 teams back where it all started with her, as she aims to give back to the next generation at Glentoran Women F.C

Glentoran win the 2019 Electric Ireland Women's Challenge Cup final

Glentoran Women defended their Electric Ireland Women's Challenge Cup crown with a 1-0 win over Linfield Ladies on Saturday night.

In what was a repeat of last year's final, Emma McMaster's early goal proved the defining moment in the showpiece decider.

A long-range strike from Demi Vance wasn't gathered by Linfield goalkeeper Lauren Perry, and McMaster reacted quickest to poke the ball home.

The win saw the Glens add the Irish Cup to their Co Antrim Shield and League Cup successes this season, completing an impressive trophy treble.

For Linfield, it ended any hopes of the double - but they are just one game away from clinching the Danske Bank Women's Premiership title.

Glentoran took the lead in the fifth minute. Vance tried her luck  with a powerful shot from all of 35 yards that was parried into the air by Blues keeper Perry.

The ball bounced inside the six-yard area and McMaster pounced to force home the rebound.

Vance was at it again moments later with another long-range effort that was deflected behind for a corner.

Kelly Bailie then had a chance for Glentoran Women as they continued their bright start to the final.

Linfield Ladies responded with Casey Howe unfortunate not to get enough of a touch on Caitlin McGuinness' cross.

Linfield had the ball in the net in the second half but it was ruled out for offside, compounding their frustration on the night.

Glentoran Women had another let-off when Regan Lehman almost turned the ball into her own net when attempting to clear, the ball bobbling just past the post.

Linfield tried to muster a late equaliser but were reduced to speculative efforts.

And it wasn't long before the final whistle sounded, sparking wild scenes from the Glentoran squad as they celebrated another Irish Cup win.

Toals County Antrim Cup Final

 Glentoran Women 2-1 Crusaders Strikers

Two second half goals from Kerry Beattie secured a 2-1 win over Crusaders in tonight's Toals' County Antrim Cup Final at Seaview. The Glens played for the last 30 minutes with only 10 players after skipper Jess Foy was adjudged to have handled in the area to concede a penalty that allowed Crusaders to equalise Beattie's opener.

Remarkably tonight's victory means that the Glens are currently holders of all three domestic knockout cups after previous final wins over Sion Swifts and Linfield.

Women's Premiership League Cup Final

 Glentoran Women 2-0 Sion Swifts

Glentoran Women hit a quickfire second half double to seal victory against Sion Swifts Ladies in the final of the Women’s Premiership League Cup.

The evenly matched final burst into life after 13 minutes when Rachel Rogan was adjudged to have been fouled by Tasmin McCarter. Demi Vance stepped up but her tame penalty was well saved by Nicole McClure in the Sion Swifts’ goal.

It proved to be the best chance of a half which produced limited chances, as Rachel Rogan narrowly missed out on the opportunity to open the scoring for the Glens on 25 minutes when her close range effort went narrowly wide from a good position – with the sides going in level at the break.

In the second half it was the East Belfast pressing forward against their County Tyrone opponents, but were restricted to a number of unsuccessful long range free-kicks firstly through Vance again, then Makyla Mulholland.

The breakthrough came on 75 minutes as Demi Vance on hand to fire home from a tight angle after Rachel Rogan’s initial effort which had bounced back off the foot of the post.

Player of the match Demi Vance doubled her tally for the evening straight from the restart to kill the game off in balmy conditions at Seaview. She raced through the centre of the Sion defence and slid the ball under Jamaican international keeper McClure.

Time eventually ran out for the Swifts, as Glentoran Women celebrated their first League Cup success in the NI Football League at Seaview.

New Signing: Jessica Davis

Glentoran Women are delighted to announce the signing of Jessica Davis.

Jessie, from Fairfax, Virginia originally played for a few different hometown clubs growing up.

In 2009, she graduated from Penn State University, a top 10 program in NCAA Division where she was the two-year Captain.

After graduation, she took some time off playing competitively to pursue her Master's Degree and career. In 2015, she started training for the 2016 season with the Boston Breakers.

2016: Jessie played for the Boston Breakers Reserves in Boston, USA (National Champions WPSL)

2017: Played for Peninsula Power in Brisbane, Australia (Captain, NPL Champions, Grand Final Winners)

2018: She played for IK Uppsala in Uppsala, Sweden

Jessie says she is "Absolutely delighted to be with the Glens" and is looking forward to the task ahead.

Emma makes a return

 

Glentoran Women are delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Emma Higgins.

Emma played for her hometown club Ballymena before joining Glentoran in 2007, She then went on to win a scholarship to Leeds Metropolitan University and signed for Leeds United. Since then she has played for Icelandic club Grindavík and most recently Selfoss. She was previously with Doncaster Rovers Belles of the FA WSL.

Emma made her senior Northern Ireland debut aged 17, against Portugal at the Algarve Cup. Eight years later she made her 50th appearance against New Zealand at the Cyprus Cup.

Emma brings a wealth of experience to the club and we are delighted to have her onboard.

GWFC Take Oval Salute

The cup winning Glentoran Womens team and their management and coaching team were welcomed to Monday night's "Big Two" men's first team match with Linfield. The squad were welcomed into The Oval boardroom by the Board of Directors then proudly paraded the Electric Ireland Women's Irish Cup on the pitch before kick off. The cup winners received a great reception from the bumper home crowd.

ELECTRIC IRELAND WOMEN'S IRISH CUP FINAL 2018

Glentoran Women 2-1 Linfield Ladies

Two almost identical goals in the final 10 minutes of the game helped Glentoran Women to deservedly win the Electric Ireland Women’s Challenge Cup this evening.

Makyla Mulholland twice produced powerful headed finishes from Demi Vance corners to ensure the Glens edged past champions elect Linfield Ladies 2-1 in the cup final at the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park.

Linfield had opened the scoring on 61 minutes through Megan Bell but the Glens kept pressing and duly got their reward thanks to the contributions from two of their more experienced players. 

On the balance of play Billy Clarke’s side deserved their record seventh Women’s Irish Cup success. Linfield, who are on the cusp of winning the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership crown, were stifled by the Glens, who harried and hassled them but also produced some flowing football.

Young Glens forward Caragh Milligan, who was the best player on the park, was constantly on the move and her strong running was a thorn in Linfield’s side throughout the match. 

And it was Milligan who had the first decent effort of the game in the 13th minute, her snapshot drifting just wide of the upright.

Fellow Northern Ireland international Megan Bell was full of running for the Blues and she produced Linfield’s first shot, although her effort was straight at the keeper. 

Kelly Bailie, who pocketed her seventh Women’s Irish Cup medal this evening, was a strong presence in midfield for the Glens alongside Nadene Caldwell and Vance.

On 26 minutes Vance shot high and wide after making a decent break and minutes later Milligan screwed an effort past the post.

Then Linfield’s Bell blasted the ball over the top before the Glens’ Bailie struck a sweet long range shot which went just wide of the upright.

In the 32nd minute Caldwell produced a great run from deep and fed Rachel Rogan but her shot was weak. 

Moments later Linfield midfielder Chloe McCarron ran powerfully at the Glens backline but her shot drifted over the bar. And just before the break Bell produced a great run before scooping a drive wide of the mark. 

The Glens were on the front foot after the restart and Bailie smashed a shot just over the top from long range. 

Linfield, however, then enjoyed a purple patch which ended with them taking the lead.

McGuinness swung in a free-kick which evaded everyone and went inches wide of the post before a flowing move down the left flank ended with McCarron firing over the top.

Bell had an effort smothered by Glens keeper Ashleigh McKinnon on 60 minutes but just a minute later McGuinness found her on the edge of the area and Bell smashed the ball into the roof of the net to give the Blues the lead.

The Glens continued to pile forward, however. Another pinpoint Bailie delivery was pushed away by Linfield keeper Jamie-Lee Wilson, Glens captain Jessica Foy shot straight at the keeper after getting on the end of a Milligan cut-back and then a Bailie blaster from a free-kick was saved by the Linfield keeper with her feet.

The pressure from the east Belfast side paid off, however, in the 83rd minute when Mullholland rose powerfully to meet a great Vance delivery from a corner.

Minutes later Milligan’s angled drive nestled on the top of the Linfield net and then Caldwell fired a shot just over the top as the Glens went for the jugular. 

In the 88th minute the Glens made it 2-1 with a goal almost identical to their first. Vance whipped the ball in from a corner and Mulholland headed what proved to be the winner home.
