Match Preview: Glentoran Women v Cliftonville Ladies

Wed, 03/07/2024 - 14:20

A massive game in store at the Blanchflower tomorrow night as the 2 dominant teams in NI Women’s Football in the past few seasons – the only 2 with a 100% league record so far – meet in the Sports Direct Premiership.

The Reds have had first blood between the teams this season, winning 3-2 at Solitude in April in the Semi Final of the League Cup. On that occasion the Reds came back to win after trailing 2-1 through goals from Emily Wilson and Demi Vance. The Reds went on to win the final last weekend with a 2-0 win over Lisburn Rangers Ladies.

Our last league meeting was a pivotal one in the 2023 title race as it was the Glens turn to overcome an early blow as an early second penalty from Kerry Beattie equalised Caitlin McGuinness’ early opener to earn the draw that effectively secured the return of the Championship trophy back to East Belfast after a year away.

Both teams come into this one following tough encounters at the weekend – the Reds in their League Cup Final and the Glens after a hard-fought home league win over Larne. Cliftonville have recently been boosted by the return of last season’s NI POTY Danielle Maxwell after the former Glens winger’s short-lived spell with Blackburn Rovers.

Tomorrow night’s match kicks off at 7.45pm
